So, last week, I spoke to an old client and friend about how it was to live and work on board a cruise ship for 30+ years (off and on). I shared my experiences, the people I have met, and some amazing memories, the good ones, the not so good ones, and the ones that are just too wild to comprehend.
What I also shared is the dream that I have had for the past 10+ years, which was, and still is, to retire and live on a ship, cruising around the world. This morning, I re-read this fantastic article from 2022 (which is saved to my "to-do-list"), published by Condé Nast Traveler, which tells the stories of retirees, who decided to do just that, live on a cruise ship. So, I decided to write this short post, just in case any of you are considering this option.
Living on a cruise ship permanently has become a real possibility! There are a couple of ways to achieve this lifestyle:
Buying a residence: Companies like Storylines offer residences for purchase on their cruise ships. These range from studios to multi-bedroom condos, priced from around $150,000 to over $8 million [US dollars]. This option gives you ownership and the ability to customize your space
Long-term leases: Some residences may be available on long-term leases (e.g. 24 years) as an alternative to buying. This could be a good option if you're unsure about the cruise ship lifestyle or don't want the upfront cost of buying.
Here are some things to consider before purchasing a permanent residence on a cruise ship:
Cost: Besides the purchase price, there are annual maintenance fees that can be significant.
Limited space: Even the largest residences on cruise ships will be smaller than a typical house or apartment.
Itinerary: While some ships offer some resident input on itineraries, you'll be following a pre-determined course for most of the time.
Legalities: Consider tax implications and residency requirements for your situation.
Living on a cruise ship permanently offers an adventurous lifestyle with constant travel and amenities at your doorstep. There are several cruise lines which offer such a lifestyle, So, do your research to see if it's the right fit for you!
